- 22 March 1972 - The Red Sox trade reliever Sparky Lyle to the Yankees for first baseman Danny Cater. Lyle notches 141 saves and the 1977 Cy Young Award over the next seven seasons for the Bronx Bombers while Cater, brought in to replace power-hitting first baseman George Scott, hits .237 and only eight home runs in his first season and becomes a benchwarmer for his last two years with Boston.
